What is 2FA / MFA?

Two Factor Authentication (2FA) / Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) are a simple and powerful way to add a very strong layer of security to your SMV account.

Imagine you owned a treasure chest (your SMV account) protected by a lock (your password), Two-factor authentication is like adding a second lock to your treasure chest.

If someone figured out your password, they still need the second key (a code generated on your smart phone) to unlock the chest and access your secure files.

The secret key that is generated is created on your phone (no communication with any server) and is based on the 2FA secret code and the current time... so no one can guess it, as it needs to be generated in real time.

2FA can be setup using free apps such as Authy or Google Authenticator, while using your Secure Media Vault account.

Here is a great video that explains 2FA by PC Mag on YouTube

How is Secure Media Vault so secure?

Secure Media Vault partners with CloudFlare for online security and uses encrypted data storage buckets to hold all user files.

All user data is completely inaccessible outside of the SMV site and no 3rd party can gain access under any circumstances.

Knowing a files direct location (URL) won't give anyone access to your file.
In fact, even we can't get direct access to your files with how they're stored.

For your security, client data is not kept on our local server at all (no thumbnails, not a single user file).

We also do not keep any credit card or financial information on our server either; partnering with Stripe our payments provider, Secure Media Vault is 100% PCI DSS compliant for your safety & security.

Do you offer client side encryption?

We have client side encryption in development and it will be available shortly.

This represents some technical challenges with media streaming that we're working on but it's on the way and we look forward to being able to offer it as an additional security option.

Keep in mind, while client side encryption is very strong; if you lose access to it, there is literally nothing anyone can do to help you... so it should only be used in the most strictest of security requirements and with a lot of caution & understanding.

Can deleted data be recovered?

Data that is delete from Secure Media Vault storage can be recovered up to 30 days after it is deleted, unless you request that it is permanently deleted; then it will be permanently deleted from our service within 2-3 business days.

Archives are kept for long term data recovery, although these would need to be manually recovered; so a fee will apply to recover this data to your account if you require it in the future.
